“I know the throttle did a album on this oddity of a 4×4 but couldn’t help but notice there was no info on it! I just happened to purchase one of only a handful of these in north america. Only 6’000 of them where ever made and never sold in North America it is rather a rare care and I have loved learning about mine, here are the facts and a few shots of my own.
1991 VW Golf Country. It starts with your basic 4 door Mk2 Golf, sporting 1.8 L engine mated to a 5 speed manual. Thats then sent through to all four wheels via Synchro, the VW all wheel drive system. To lift the golf they have placed a full tubular frame underneath, that also supports the front engine/trans skid plate and other added armour. To complete the off road package a front bush guard with fog lights and high power off road lights and rear swing out tire carrier and bumper guards. There was a Chrome package available too (about 500) that came with, well chrome accents. I have read they also made 50 Golf Country GTI versions available to VW staff only at the time.”
