VW sure are proud of themselves today. They just released details of the XL1 concept car and boy oh boy it's efficient! Sporting a whopping .08-liter two-cylinder diesel engine coupled with an electric powertrain, the plug-in hybrid is supposed to get up to 261 mpg. That's pretty wild if you ask me, but the XL1 will not be ready for production any time soon. Most of the ideas used are not quite ready for prime time. Case in point is the XL1's super light body structure. The super-hybrid's body is made using a new process that utilizes carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers which results in a super strong and light monocoque structure. Effective, but very expensive.
Good for VW, now let's just see them take these concepts into production.
